Week 2 — Communication & Connection
Day 8 — Be Honest Without Being Hurtful
Scripture
Ephesians 4:15 KJV
“But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ.”
Devotional Thought
Healthy marriages need honesty, but honesty should never become an excuse for harshness.
There is a difference between telling the truth and using the truth as a weapon.
Sometimes we avoid difficult conversations because we are afraid they will cause conflict. Other times, we speak too quickly and say things in ways that create unnecessary hurt.
Scripture gives us a better pattern:
Speak the truth in love.
That means honesty with tenderness.
Clarity with compassion.
Truth with grace.
Your spouse should be able to trust that even when you need to say something difficult, your goal is not to tear them down but to strengthen the relationship.
Before you speak, ask yourself:
“Will the way I say this help us grow closer—or push us farther apart?”
Talk Together
Is there anything you have been hesitant to share because you were unsure how I would respond?
Couple’s Challenge
Practice listening to one honest concern from your spouse today without interrupting, defending, or immediately explaining yourself.
Prayer Together
Lord, help us speak truth with love. Give us courage to be honest and wisdom to be gentle. Guard our words from anger, pride, and defensiveness, and help our conversations bring healing instead of hurt. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Day 9 — Put Down the Scorecard
Scripture
1 Corinthians 13:5 KJV
“Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil.”
Devotional Thought
Marriage becomes exhausting when everything begins to feel like a competition.
I did this.
You didn’t do that.
I apologized last time.
I always have to be the one.
Without realizing it, couples can begin keeping an invisible scorecard.
But love is not meant to be a transaction.
Love serves.
Love gives grace.
Love notices what the other person contributes instead of constantly measuring what is missing.
This does not mean responsibilities should never be discussed. Healthy couples should communicate openly about needs and expectations.
But there is a difference between solving a problem and collecting evidence against your spouse.
Marriage grows stronger when both people stop asking:
“Who is doing more?”
and start asking:
“How can I love you well today?”
Talk Together
Is there an area of our marriage where either of us feels unnoticed, unappreciated, or overwhelmed?
Couple’s Challenge
Thank your spouse for one thing they do regularly that you may have started taking for granted.
Prayer Together
Father, forgive us for the times we keep score. Help us notice each other’s efforts and serve one another with grateful hearts. Keep resentment from taking root in our marriage. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Day 10 — Protect Your Friendship
Scripture
Proverbs 17:17 KJV
“A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.”
Devotional Thought
Before the bills, schedules, responsibilities, children, appointments, and endless to-do lists, there was friendship.
You enjoyed talking.
You laughed together.
You looked forward to seeing one another.
Marriage should not cause that friendship to disappear.
One of the greatest gifts you can give your relationship is continuing to enjoy each other.
Laugh together.
Talk about something besides responsibilities.
Be silly.
Go somewhere together.
Remember what it felt like to simply enjoy being in the same room.
Romance matters, but friendship is often what carries couples through the ordinary days and difficult seasons.
Do not become so busy building a life together that you forget to enjoy the person you are building it with.
Talk Together
What is one thing we used to love doing together that we have not done in a while?
Couple’s Challenge
Plan one simple date or intentional moment together this week. It does not have to cost anything.
Prayer Together
Lord, thank You for the friendship within our marriage. Help us protect it, nurture it, and enjoy one another again and again. Bring laughter, conversation, and joy into our home. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Day 11 — Love in Their Language
Scripture
Romans 12:10 KJV
“Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another.”
Devotional Thought
We often show love in the way we naturally want to receive it.
But your spouse may experience love differently than you do.
One person may feel loved through encouraging words.
Another through quality time.
Another through affection, thoughtful gifts, or practical help.
Loving your spouse well means learning their heart.
It means paying attention to what makes them feel seen, valued, and cared for.
Sometimes the question is not:
“Do I love my spouse?”
The better question is:
“Does my spouse experience my love in a way they can recognize?”
Marriage invites us to become students of one another.
Keep learning.
Keep noticing.
Keep asking.
Talk Together
What makes you feel most loved by me?
Couple’s Challenge
Take your spouse’s answer seriously and do one specific thing today that speaks love in a way meaningful to them.
Prayer Together
Father, teach us how to love one another thoughtfully. Help us pay attention to each other’s needs and preferences so our love is not only felt in our hearts but clearly experienced in our marriage. Amen.
Day 12 — Let the Little Things Go
Scripture
Proverbs 19:11 KJV
“The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.”
Devotional Thought
Not every irritation deserves a confrontation.
Not every mistake needs correcting.
Not every preference has to become an argument.
Sometimes peace is found in learning what to release.
Marriage puts two different people in close proximity every day. There will be habits that annoy you, decisions you would have made differently, and moments when your spouse simply gets on your nerves.
That does not mean something is wrong with your marriage.
Sometimes maturity means recognizing:
“This is not worth damaging our peace.”
There are important issues that absolutely need healthy conversation. But wisdom helps us distinguish between genuine concerns and little frustrations that can simply be covered with grace.
Talk Together
Are there small things we have been allowing to create unnecessary tension between us?
Couple’s Challenge
Choose one minor frustration today that you will intentionally let go without commenting on it.
Prayer Together
Lord, give us wisdom to know what needs to be addressed and what simply needs grace. Help us stop magnifying small irritations and protect the peace in our home. Amen.
Day 13 — Make Room for Laughter
Scripture
Proverbs 17:22 KJV
“A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.”
Devotional Thought
Marriage carries serious responsibilities.
There are bills to pay, decisions to make, children to care for, problems to solve, and burdens to carry.
But your marriage was never meant to feel like one endless business meeting.
There should still be room for joy.
Room for laughter.
Room for inside jokes.
Room for ridiculous moments that nobody else would understand.
Laughter reminds us that marriage is not only something to maintain.
It is something to enjoy.
Some of the strongest couples are not the ones who never face difficulty. They are the ones who somehow continue finding reasons to smile together in the middle of it.
Talk Together
What is one memory of us that still makes you laugh?
Couple’s Challenge
Do something intentionally fun together today. Watch something funny, play a game, revisit an old memory, or simply be silly together.
Prayer Together
God, thank You for the gift of joy. Bring laughter into our home and remind us not to become so weighed down by responsibilities that we forget to enjoy one another. Amen.
Day 14 — Remember Your Story
Scripture
Psalm 77:11 KJV
“I will remember the works of the LORD: surely I will remember thy wonders of old.”
Devotional Thought
When a marriage enters a difficult season, it can become easy to focus only on what is wrong right now.
But your relationship has a story.
There were prayers God answered.
There were moments you never thought you would survive.
There were seasons of joy.
There were firsts.
There were unexpected blessings.
There were times when God carried you both.
Remembering does not erase present challenges, but it can restore perspective.
Sometimes you need to look back and remind yourselves:
“God has been faithful to us before.”
Your marriage is more than the chapter you are currently living.
Do not judge the whole story by one difficult page.
Talk Together
What is one favorite memory from our relationship, and what is one season where we can clearly see that God carried us?
Couple’s Challenge
Look through old pictures, wedding photos, messages, or memories together and each choose one moment you are especially thankful for.
Prayer Together
Father, thank You for every chapter of our story. Thank You for the joyful memories and for the difficult seasons You have brought us through. Help us remember Your faithfulness and trust You with the chapters still ahead. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
