Week 3: Grace Through Difficult Seasons

Day 15 — When Marriage Feels Heavy

Scripture

Matthew 11:28 KJV

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

Devotional Thought

Some seasons of marriage are simply hard.

Not necessarily because either person has failed, but because life itself becomes heavy.

Grief.
Parenting.
Finances.
Work.
Caregiving.
Health concerns.
Unexpected changes.
Exhaustion.

When both of you are carrying more than usual, it can become easy to mistake weariness for disconnection.

Sometimes your marriage does not need another serious conversation or another attempt to “fix” everything.

Sometimes you both need rest.

You need compassion.

You need to remember that Jesus never asked either of you to carry every burden alone.

Instead of asking, “Why aren’t we doing better?” try asking:

“How can I help carry what you’re carrying?”

A strong marriage isn’t one where neither person becomes weary.

It’s one where two weary people keep turning toward Christ—and toward each other.

Talk Together

What feels heaviest for you right now?

Couple’s Challenge

Ask your spouse:

“What is one thing I could take off your plate this week?”

Then follow through.

Prayer Together

Lord, You know every burden we are carrying. When life feels heavy, keep us from turning against one another. Teach us to carry each other’s burdens with patience and compassion. Give us rest where we are weary and remind us that we do not have to face any season without You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Day 16 — Forgive Again

Scripture

Ephesians 4:32 KJV

“And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.”

Devotional Thought

Marriage gives two people countless opportunities to forgive.

Sometimes the hurt is small.

Sometimes it runs much deeper.

Forgiveness does not mean pretending something did not hurt. It does not mean ignoring unhealthy behavior or refusing necessary boundaries.

Forgiveness means refusing to allow bitterness to become a permanent resident in your heart.

There may be situations where trust must be rebuilt slowly.

There may be wounds that require difficult conversations, accountability, prayer, and time.

But even then, God calls us away from revenge and toward grace.

Before asking:

“Does my spouse deserve forgiveness?”

Remember how often Christ has forgiven you.

Grace received should eventually become grace extended.

Talk Together

Is there anything between us that we need to bring honestly before God?

Couple’s Challenge

If you have wronged your spouse, offer a sincere apology without excuses.

If you are carrying resentment, begin praying specifically for God to help you release it.

Prayer Together

Father, thank You for the forgiveness You have shown us through Jesus. Help us forgive one another with tender hearts. Where trust has been damaged, give us wisdom to rebuild it faithfully. Keep bitterness from growing between us and teach us to choose grace. Amen.

Day 17 — When You Don’t Agree

Scripture

Philippians 2:3-4 KJV

“Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.
Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.”

Devotional Thought

Marriage does not require two people to have identical opinions.

You may disagree about money.

Parenting.

Schedules.

Family.

Priorities.

Decisions.

Even small everyday things.

The goal is not to eliminate every disagreement.

The goal is learning how to disagree without dishonoring one another.

During conflict, ask yourself:

“Am I trying to understand my spouse—or am I only trying to prove that I’m right?”

Humility makes room for another person’s perspective.

You can remain convinced of your own position while still treating your spouse with respect.

Sometimes the greatest breakthrough in a disagreement begins with:

“Help me understand why this matters so much to you.”

Talk Together

When we disagree, what helps you feel respected by me?

Couple’s Challenge

During your next disagreement, summarize your spouse’s point of view before explaining your own.

Prayer Together

Lord, give us humility when we disagree. Keep pride, sarcasm, and harshness out of our conversations. Help us listen carefully and honor one another even when we see things differently. Give us wisdom to pursue unity without demanding sameness. Amen.

Day 18 — Protect Your Marriage

Scripture

Proverbs 4:23 KJV

“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”

Devotional Thought

Anything valuable deserves protection.

Your marriage is no different.

Very few marriages are damaged overnight.

Often, distance begins through small compromises.

Too little time together.

Too much attention given elsewhere.

Private conversations that cross boundaries.

Unresolved resentment.

Technology that occupies every quiet moment.

Allowing everyone else access to parts of your marriage that should remain between husband, wife, and God.

Protecting your marriage does not mean living suspiciously.

It means living intentionally.

Ask yourselves:

“Is there anything slowly creating distance between us?”

What you protect communicates what you value.

Talk Together

Is anything currently receiving more attention, energy, or emotional investment than it should?

Couple’s Challenge

Choose one boundary you can strengthen together this week.

It might involve phones, social media, work, outside relationships, or protected couple time.

Prayer Together

God, place Your protection around our marriage. Give us wisdom to recognize anything that could slowly divide us. Help us guard our hearts, our time, our intimacy, and our commitment to one another. Keep our marriage faithful and centered on You. Amen.

Day 19 — Trust God With the Finances

Scripture

Matthew 6:31-33 KJV

“Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?
(For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

Devotional Thought

Money can reveal much more than numbers.

It can reveal fear.

Control.

Different priorities.

Past experiences.

Insecurity.

Generosity.

Trust.

Financial stress can quickly become marital stress when husband and wife begin blaming each other instead of facing the situation together.

God invites you to bring your finances under His authority.

Pray before major decisions.

Be honest about spending.

Set shared goals.

Talk openly about fears.

Learn to say:

“This is not your problem or my problem. This is something we’re going to face together with God.”

Ultimately, everything belongs to Him.

You are simply learning to steward it together.

Talk Together

What is one financial concern or goal we need to begin praying about together?

Couple’s Challenge

Spend a few minutes reviewing one financial goal without blame or criticism.

Then pray specifically about it.

Prayer Together

Father, You know every financial need we have. Keep money from becoming a source of division between us. Give us wisdom, discipline, contentment, generosity, and unity. Help us seek You first and trust You as our Provider. Amen.

Day 20 — Parenting as Partners

Scripture

Proverbs 22:6 KJV

“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”

Devotional Thought

Parenting can be one of the greatest joys of marriage—and one of its greatest pressures.

Two people often enter parenting with different childhood experiences, expectations, personalities, and approaches.

One parent may be stricter.

The other may be more flexible.

One may focus on consequences.

The other may naturally offer comfort.

Different approaches do not automatically make either parent wrong.

But children benefit when Mom and Dad work toward unity.

Do not undermine one another in front of your children.

Talk privately when you disagree.

Pray about parenting decisions.

Remember that neither of you has to parent perfectly.

You simply need to keep seeking God’s wisdom together.

Your children are learning more than your rules.

They are watching how their parents treat each other while making those rules.

Talk Together

Where do you think we work well together as parents? Where could we become more united?

Couple’s Challenge

Choose one parenting issue you have been handling differently and calmly agree on one shared approach.

Prayer Together

Lord, thank You for the children You have entrusted to us. Give us wisdom to lead them well. Help us support one another instead of competing or criticizing. Give us unity, patience, consistency, and grace as we raise them to know and follow You. Amen.

Day 21 — Give God the Future

Scripture

Proverbs 3:5-6 KJV

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

Devotional Thought

When you said your vows, neither of you knew everything the future would hold.

You did not know every blessing.

Every disappointment.

Every detour.

Every answered prayer.

Every season of waiting.

Yet God already knew.

And He still does.

Marriage can become stressful when we believe we must figure out the entire future before we can have peace.

But God rarely gives us the whole map.

He asks us to trust Him with the next step.

Your future may look different from what you originally imagined.

That does not mean God has left your story.

Keep dreaming together.

Keep planning.

But hold those plans with open hands.

Sometimes the strongest statement a couple can make is:

“We don’t know what comes next, but we know Who goes with us.”

Talk Together

What is one dream you still have for our future together?

What is one uncertainty we need to surrender to God?

Couple’s Challenge

Each of you share one dream for your marriage or family.

Then hold hands and pray over those dreams together.

Prayer Together

Father, we place our future in Your hands. Lead our marriage wherever You want us to go. Give us courage when the path is uncertain and faith when we cannot see what comes next. Help us dream together without trying to control everything. Direct our steps and make our marriage part of Your purpose. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Week 3 Reminder

You do not need to know exactly what the future holds.

You do not need a marriage without struggles.

You need hearts that continually turn toward God and one another.

Hard seasons do not have to divide you. With Christ at the center, they can become the very seasons that teach you how to stand together. ❤️
