Week 4: Growing Closer, Choosing Each Other, and Building a Christ-Centered Legacy
Day 22 — Pursue Your Spouse
Scripture
Song of Solomon 2:16 KJV
“My beloved is mine, and I am his: he feedeth among the lilies.”
Devotional Thought
Marriage should never become so familiar that we stop pursuing one another.
In the beginning, you probably made time to talk, laugh, dress up, flirt, hold hands, and learn everything you could about each other. Then life happened.
Work.
Bills.
Children.
Responsibilities.
Exhaustion.
Without realizing it, husbands and wives can begin functioning more like teammates managing a household than two people deeply in love.
Pursuit does not have to be extravagant. Sometimes it looks like reaching for their hand, sending a sweet message, making their favorite meal, sitting beside them instead of across the room, or reminding them:
“I still choose you.”
Never stop learning your spouse. Never stop noticing them. Never stop giving your marriage intentional attention.
Talk Together
What is something I used to do when we were dating that made you feel especially loved?
Couple’s Challenge
Do one thing today that makes your spouse feel pursued—not simply appreciated, but wanted.
Prayer Together
Lord, help us never become careless with the love You have given us. Teach us to continue pursuing one another with affection, friendship, and intentionality. Keep our hearts tender toward each other and remind us daily of the gift we have in our marriage. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Day 23 — Serve One Another
Scripture
Galatians 5:13 KJV
“For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.”
Devotional Thought
Some of the deepest expressions of love in marriage happen in very ordinary moments.
Doing the dishes when your spouse is exhausted.
Making the coffee.
Taking care of bedtime.
Filling the gas tank.
Picking something up without being asked.
Taking over when the other person has reached their limit.
Jesus demonstrated love through service, and marriage gives us countless opportunities to follow His example.
Serving does not mean one spouse should carry everything while the other does nothing. Healthy marriage involves mutual care.
Instead of asking:
“What have you done for me lately?”
Try asking:
“How can I make your day a little lighter?”
Small acts of service say:
“I see you. I appreciate you. We are in this together.”
Talk Together
What is one practical thing I could do more often that would make you feel cared for?
Couple’s Challenge
Quietly complete one task your spouse normally handles.
Do it without announcing it or expecting recognition.
Prayer Together
Jesus, You showed us what love looks like through humble service. Give us hearts that willingly care for one another. Help us notice when the other is tired, overwhelmed, or carrying too much, and teach us to serve each other joyfully. Amen.
Day 24 — Guard Intimacy
Scripture
Genesis 2:24 KJV
“Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.”
Devotional Thought
God designed marriage for closeness.
Not just physical closeness, but emotional, spiritual, and relational intimacy.
Yet intimacy rarely survives on autopilot.
Schedules become full. Children need attention. Phones steal conversations. Stress drains energy. Before long, two people who love each other can begin feeling more like roommates.
Protecting intimacy means creating space where your spouse can be fully known and still feel loved.
Talk.
Touch.
Laugh.
Pray.
Be affectionate.
Make time for private conversations.
Ask about your spouse’s heart instead of only discussing responsibilities.
Closeness grows when both people feel safe, valued, respected, and intentionally chosen.
Talk Together
What helps you feel closest to me emotionally, spiritually, and physically?
Couple’s Challenge
Create at least 20 minutes of distraction-free time tonight—no phones, television, chores, or multitasking.
Just be together.
Prayer Together
Father, protect the intimacy of our marriage. Help us make room for one another in the middle of busy lives. Deepen our friendship, affection, communication, and spiritual connection. May our marriage be a place of trust, safety, tenderness, and love. Amen.
Day 25 — Cheer for Each Other
Scripture
1 Thessalonians 5:11 KJV
“Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.”
Devotional Thought
Your spouse should not have to leave home to find someone who believes in them.
The world already provides plenty of criticism.
Marriage should provide encouragement.
Notice their gifts.
Celebrate their growth.
Thank them for what they do.
Remind them of who God created them to be when they begin doubting themselves.
Your words carry tremendous weight because they come from the person whose opinion matters deeply.
There may be seasons when your spouse cannot see their own strength.
Be the voice that says:
“I see what God has placed in you.”
You do not have to agree with every dream or pretend every idea is perfect. But your marriage should be a place where each person feels safe enough to grow, try, learn, and become.
Talk Together
What is one dream, gift, or goal you wish I encouraged more?
Couple’s Challenge
Tell your spouse one quality or gift you genuinely admire in them and explain why.
Prayer Together
Lord, teach us to build each other up. Keep criticism from becoming louder than encouragement in our home. Help us recognize the gifts You have placed in one another and become faithful supporters of the work You are doing in each of our lives. Amen.
Day 26 — Don’t Compare
Scripture
Galatians 6:4 KJV
“But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.”
Devotional Thought
Comparison can quietly rob a marriage of gratitude.
Someone else’s spouse appears more romantic.
Their house looks nicer.
Their family seems happier.
Their vacations look better.
Their marriage looks effortless.
But what you see—especially online—is usually a collection of moments, not the entire story.
Every marriage has struggles that are not visible from the outside.
God has not called you to build someone else’s marriage.
He has entrusted you with yours.
Instead of looking across the fence, look across the room.
Notice what God has already given you.
Notice the person beside you.
Notice the prayers He has answered.
Comparison says:
“Why can’t we have what they have?”
Gratitude says:
“Thank You, God, for what You are building here.”
Talk Together
Is there any area where comparison has caused us to feel dissatisfied with our marriage or life?
Couple’s Challenge
Together, name five things you are grateful for about your marriage.
Prayer Together
Father, forgive us for the times we compare our marriage to someone else’s. Help us recognize the blessings You have placed right in front of us. Give us grateful hearts and teach us to faithfully nurture the relationship You have given us. Amen.
Day 27 — Worship Together
Scripture
Joshua 24:15 KJV
“And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
Devotional Thought
There is something powerful about a husband and wife making the decision together:
Jesus will be honored in this home.
That does not mean your home will be perfect.
It means that when you fail, you return to Him.
When you celebrate, you thank Him.
When you struggle, you seek Him.
When you make decisions, you ask for His wisdom.
When you do not know what comes next, you trust Him.
Worship together.
Pray together.
Read Scripture together.
Serve together.
Let your children and the people around you see that faith is not something you practice only inside a church building.
Jesus belongs in the kitchen, the living room, the car, the finances, the parenting, the arguments, the dreams, and every ordinary moment in between.
Talk Together
What could we do more consistently to make Christ the center of our home?
Couple’s Challenge
Choose a worship song and listen to it together tonight. Then hold hands and pray for your home and family.
Prayer Together
Lord, our home belongs to You. May our words, choices, priorities, and marriage honor You. Teach us to worship You together in both joyful and difficult seasons. Let the atmosphere of our home reflect Your presence, grace, and truth. Amen.
Day 28 — Choose Each Other Again
Scripture
Ruth 1:16 KJV
“And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge…”
Devotional Thought
Marriage is built through thousands of small choices.
You choose whether to move toward one another or pull away.
You choose whether to apologize.
You choose whether to forgive.
You choose whether to initiate affection.
You choose whether to listen.
You choose whether to make time.
You choose whether to protect your relationship when other things compete for your attention.
The vows you made on your wedding day were spoken once, but marriage gives you opportunities to live them repeatedly.
Some seasons make that choosing easy.
Others require intention.
Today, remember:
Love is not only something you feel. It is someone you continue to choose.
Choose tenderness.
Choose grace.
Choose friendship.
Choose communication.
Choose prayer.
Choose us.
Talk Together
What is one small thing we could do consistently that would help us feel more connected?
Couple’s Challenge
Tell your spouse:
“If I had to choose again, I would still choose you because…”
Then finish the sentence.
Prayer Together
Father, thank You for the person You have placed beside us. Help us never take one another for granted. Give us the grace to keep choosing love, forgiveness, friendship, and commitment through every season. Amen.
Day 29 — Leave a Legacy
Scripture
Psalm 78:4 KJV
“We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done.”
Devotional Thought
Your marriage is telling a story.
Children notice how you speak to one another.
Family members notice how you walk through hardship.
Friends notice how you forgive.
Others may see how you pray, serve, sacrifice, laugh, and remain faithful through difficult seasons.
A godly marriage is not a marriage without problems.
It is a marriage that continually points back to God.
One day, the people closest to you may describe what they learned by watching your relationship.
What do you hope they say?
Perhaps:
“They loved each other deeply.”
“They prayed when life became difficult.”
“They forgave.”
“They kept choosing each other.”
“Jesus was at the center of their home.”
You are building more than a life together.
You are building a legacy.
Talk Together
What do we hope our children, family, and friends learn about marriage by watching us?
Couple’s Challenge
Write one sentence together:
“In our home, we want people to see…”
Keep it somewhere you will see it regularly.
Prayer Together
Lord, help us build a marriage that leaves a legacy of faith. May those who watch our lives see Your grace, forgiveness, faithfulness, and love reflected in the way we treat one another. Let our home point future generations toward Jesus. Amen.
Day 30 — Still Choosing You
Scripture
Mark 10:9 KJV
“What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.”
Devotional Thought
You have reached Day 30.
But strengthening your marriage was never meant to be a 30-day project.
It is a lifetime of choosing one another again and again.
Some days you will communicate beautifully.
Other days you will misunderstand each other.
Some seasons will feel joyful and effortless.
Others may stretch your faith and commitment in ways you never expected.
There will be mountaintops.
There will be valleys.
There may even be seasons when you have to intentionally find your way back toward one another.
Through them all:
Choose prayer.
Choose communication.
Choose forgiveness.
Choose friendship.
Choose affection.
Choose patience.
Choose grace.
Choose Jesus.
And keep choosing each other.
A beautiful marriage is not created because two perfect people found one another.
It grows when two imperfect people continually surrender themselves, their marriage, and their future to a perfect God.
Talk Together
Take turns answering:
What do you love most about our relationship?
What has God shown you about our marriage during this devotional?
What is one thing you want us to continue doing together?
Where would you love to see our marriage one year from now?
Final Couple’s Challenge
Hold hands and pray over the next year of your marriage.
Then choose one habit from these 30 days that you want to continue consistently.
Final Prayer
Father, thank You for our marriage. Thank You for every joyful moment, every difficult season You have carried us through, and every lesson still ahead.
Teach us to love each other sacrificially, forgive quickly, communicate honestly, laugh often, pray continually, and seek You above everything else.
Protect our marriage from anything that would divide us. Strengthen our friendship. Deepen our intimacy. Give us wisdom as we make decisions and grace when we disappoint one another.
May our home be filled with Your presence. May our marriage point our children, our family, our friends, and everyone around us toward Jesus.
When life is easy, keep us grateful. When life is difficult, keep us united. Through every season, remind us that we never walk alone.
We give You our marriage, our family, our dreams, and our future.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Our Marriage Commitment
With God’s help, we will:
Pray with one another and for one another.
Speak respectfully, even when we disagree.
Protect our friendship.
Forgive instead of keeping score.
Make room for laughter and affection.
Guard our marriage from anything that creates unhealthy distance.
Seek God’s wisdom before major decisions.
Encourage one another’s gifts and calling.
Face problems as teammates instead of opponents.
Keep choosing Jesus—and keep choosing each other.
Our Prayer for Our Marriage
“Lord, build something through our marriage that neither of us could build alone.”
